The benefits of box braids

<img src="boxbraidswithbangs.jpg" alt="chunky box braids bangs" />
My box braids with sweeping bangs
If like me, you have natural afro hair, you will know about the importance of protective hair styling to prevent hair breakage. Keeping it fresh and exciting can sometimes be tricky and there is often a tendency to stick with the hairstyle you are most comfy with. This was me. With a couple of exceptions, I have not really deviated from my full head weave with blunt fringe for 2 and a half years. That's a long time, isn't it?

Affordable swimwear on the high street- Summer 2014

<img src="buyswimwear.jpg" alt="buyswimwear" />

A girl can never have too much swimwear. Fact! With us girls liking to take countless selfies whilst on the beach, no one wants to be seen sporting the same swimwear all the time. Variety equals choice and choice is always a good thing. Admittedly, I own in excess of 25 bikinis and swimsuits, and I will no doubt invest in more for my upcoming travels. Bikinis do for me what shoes do for other women. They give me life!

Here are some of my favourite picks of swimwear from the high street for summer 2014.

How do you know when you are on the right path?

<img src="confusioninlife.jpg" alt="confusion in life" />

Life is complex at the best of times. Even when you try to make it simple, something unexpected always creeps up on you and makes you have to switch up your plans real quick. I guess that's the beauty of life right? I mean, it would be pretty boring if  unplanned stuff didn't happen.

In all of it's complexities and confusion, life has a way of sometimes making us doubt what we are doing and why we are doing it. Life did this to me recently.

Mila J - Smoke, Drink, Break-Up official video

<img src="milaj.jpg" alt="mila j smoke drink break up video" />
<img src="milajsmokedrinkbreakup.jpg" alt="mila j smoke" />

You may remember I blogged about an artist called Mila J a few weeks back. Welllllll, I'm blogging about her again. The more I listen to and watch her, the more in love with her I become. Her vocals are banging, she can dance her ass off and she is bloody stunning. If you're new to Mila J, she is the older sister of another of my favourites, Jhene Aiko

Mila has now dropped the video for her track, Smoke, Drink, Break Up and I would be lying if I said this video was anything short of HEAVY! From the choreography, the styling, the break in the middle, to the old skool Aaliyah vibe... Every damn thing screams awesome! I really hope Mila gets the recognition and success she deserves.

Smoke, Drink, Break Up is available to download now. Watch the video here

Sevyn Streeter and Kid Ink get close in video for nEXt

Signed to Atlantic records, Sevyn Streeter (real name Amber Denise Streeter) is one I have kept a keen eye on for a while now. After downloading her debut EP, Call Me Crazy, But... back in December, I haven't quite been able to put it down. It's R&B at its finest. The first track to be released from the EP was It won't stop, featuring the sexy vocals of Chris Brown. I swear I watched the video like 1000 times. The addiction to this track was real. Now, Sevyn Streeter has chosen the Kid Ink remix of nEXt as the next track to be released from the EP. And what a great choice too! Watch the steamy video here:

New Video- Chris Brown ft Tyga, Lil Wayne- Loyal

Chris Brown has dropped the video for his highly addictive track, Loyal- A song about groupies and fake girls who just want to attach themselves to famous names to get rich quickly.

This track is from Chris' upcoming sixth studio album, X, which is expected to be released on May 5, 2014. The video is pretty cool and contains some impressive choreography too (but then again, this is Chris brown- what else would you expect?) Look out for Usher's cameo in the video. He's still got it ;)

Black Up Full Coverage Foundation review

<img src="blackupfoundation.jpg" alt="Black up foundation review" />

Ever since I was introduced to it, I have been in love with Illamasqua Skin Base foundation and have not stopped using it. The light and natural coverage makes it feel like a second skin, which is a really great feeling. So my recent decision to switch up my foundation routine was not motivated by dissatisfaction, but more by the fact that I happened to be passing by a Black Up counter in Debenhams and fancied trying something different.

Property Investment session for young people with Hazel De Kloe

This week, I have fully immersed myself into the world of property investment. It is something I have been interested in for a while, so I thought why talk about it when you can be about it?

First off, I arranged for a top Property Investor and Mentor, Hazel De Kloe to come to my workplace and deliver an insightful talk and training session for young people, on property investment and how it all works. This session took place on Monday afternoon in Brixton (South London) and was for girls aged 14-30 years. Now, I know you are probably thinking... 'Why on earth would a 14 year old need to learn about property?' And you are not alone in your thoughts, as my colleague said the exact same thing to me. My response to this was quite simple, 'Is it ever too early to learn how to make money and become financially free? If I had been more literate in property and investment from a
younger age, where might I be now?' Her doubts were quickly laid to rest.

Valentines Day Gift from Mya- With Love EP

Mya With Love

Grammy Award winning artist, Mya, has today released a 4 song Valentine EP for her fans. The V-Day Mya offering is titled 'With Love' and is a laid back collection of 4 sexy and smooth R&B tunes. This little gift comes ahead of the release of her eighth studio album, which she is currently working on. 'With Love' is sexy and slow, two things Mya does incredibly well. It's an independent release on Mya’s Planet 9 label via InGrooves. I have always been a big Mya fan, since way back when, so it's always refreshing to hear new music from her. Happy Valentines Day beauties!

Discovering London- The Natural History Museum

<img src="Londonredphonebox.jpg" alt="Redphoneboxlondon" />
 Despite the fact I have been living in London for a little over 10 years now, I am a little ashamed to admit that I have not visited many of it's main tourist attractions. When I say 'not many', I guess it might be more accurate and honest to say 'next to none'. Ok, so I have been on the London Eye, which was awesome and breathtaking to say the least. Last year, I went on a cruise along the Thames. I once visited the V&A Museum for a Fashion exhibition... and that's about it! lol. Shameful I know!

Midi Skirts in the winter

I love me a midi skirt/dress. And despite the fact most people think they should not make an appearance unless it's spring or summer, I beg to differ. I think they make excellent winter wardrobe options too.

Here, Lauren Pope supports this notion when she stepped out in this gorgeous green Oh My Love pencil skirt, with thigh-high split which she has expertly teamed with ab-revealing black cropped top from Zara and a Topshop leather jacket.

If like me, you are not quite ready to go bare legged in this chilly weather, then I would suggest that you wear yours with black tights or biker boots. You could even team it with a chunky knit for a super stylish chilly-weather appropriate look.

Midi skirts are a versatile wardrobe necessity that's fitting for both your professional duties and your more casual affairs. Check out some of the stylish picks below. These are all currently available on the high street.

A break away- Dominican Republic 2013

Towards the end of last year, I was having quite a tough time. I felt stressed, anxious and generally weighed down- with everything! My job was bla, my relationship with my sister (who is my best friend and the closest person to me) was on the rocks and I just felt rather fed up with life. I was unimpressed with it all, to say the least. My boyfriend suggested we take a break. He was adamant that a little time away from the routine, the everyday hustle would really help to give me the pick me up that was so badly needed.

Afro hair is ugly hair

Recently, I had my adorable little cousin, Tay, come and stay over with me for the night. She is 6 years old, going on 17- a right little lady, who knows her own mind and has her own sense of style. I love being around her, she radiates beauty, elegance and everything I want my daughter to be. Together, we stayed up late watching Monsters University (which I thoroughly enjoyed) and talking about life and her Christmas prezzies.

She told me about her love for Little Mix and how her mum is taking her to see them in concert. She was well excited, bless her! I asked who her favourite member is and she told me it’s Perrie. Her reason was quite simple, ‘because she goes out with Zayn from One Direction.' I then asked her who her least favourite Little Mix member is and to my surprise, she told me it was Leigh anne. But it was what she said next that surprised me.

Me: ‘Leigh anne? But why don’t you like Leigh anne? She is super cool and she's beautiful.’

Tay: ‘Because in their Move video she wore her afro out. Why did she do that? Videos are supposed to be where you look pretty and your best. I couldn’t believe she did that! She did not look pretty at allll!’

Left to right: Perrie, Leigh Anne, Jesy & Jade

My mouth hung open in utter shock, confusion and hurt. I couldn’t believe what my beautiful little cousin (who is black by the way) had just said. And it was said so innocently. She later revealed that pretty girls wore their hair straight, like her mummy. She was totally confused with the concept of afro hair ever being considered beautiful, even though her own hair is of afro texture. She said hers looks nice because it’s in cornrows and she would never dare wear it out. She then told me that when she is older, she will have lovely straight hair like her mum.

I think my heart cried a bit that night!

Needless to say, before Tay returned back home to her mum, she got the ‘speech’ from my sister and I on how important it is to love yourself from the inside out, including every single kink of your natural hair. We tried to make her understand the psychology behind why she didn’t think afro hair was pretty or good enough, but have you ever tried explaining the power of the media and brainwashing to a 6 year old? It’s not easy man. Her little innocent eyes just looked so confused.

I really hope that as she gets older she learns to love, appreciate and cherish black hair in its natural state, rather than seeing it as ugly or strange. I pray that one day she will rock her natural hair with pride and teach her children to do so as well.

On a final note, if you are a woman of colour, please please please teach the young girls around you that ‘pretty’ or ‘good’ hair does not have to have relaxer in it, be straightened or have weave in it. If we don’t teach them, who will?

Restaurant review- Wild Mango

I love eating out, actually scratch that, I just love eating- full stop! However, although I love to fill my belly with deliciously yummy food, I am incredibly fussy about where and what I eat. I have visited one too many restaurants from hell, and I mean hell! Dirty cutlery, warm food (that gives me run belly), terrible customer service and hairs in my food are just some of the horrors that I have seen.

A while back, the other half and I were bored stiff and ridiculously hungry. We ventured out in search of something new and exciting and came across Wild Mango, a little Indian restaurant in Beckenham. From it's cosy and intimate feel, to the smiling and welcoming staff- this place was winning from the get go.
