Why I am single according to my dad

Although we have had our share of 'moments' over the years, I love my dad to pieces. I love him more than he will ever know. He is incredibly wise and in spite of his past mistakes, he really inspires me. Even as I read that back, I smile at how true it is.

Yesterday daddy dearest paid my sister and I a long overdue visit. As we all lay slumped on the couch, glass of rosè in hand, discussing the complexities of life, we somehow touched on the subject of love and relationships. When I say 'somehow touched upon,' I guess what I really mean is, I was droning on about how few decent guys I seem to come across these days and he was responding.

The conversation was along the lines of this...

Me: 'Dad, where have all the good guys gone? I'm starting to worry because I never seem to meet guys I like anymore. I even struggle to find someone who can hold my interest for more than 10 seconds. When I was younger, I never really had this problem.'

I then freaked out a little bit and started to question how attractive I was lol

My dad simply turned to me, looked me in my eyes and responded with something like this...
'Have you ever stopped to think you may be struggling to find a guy you want because as you have got older and more mature you know exactly what you do and don't want? It's not a bad thing! You are just not prepared to put up with guys who are not up to par so therefore you don't entertain them anymore? It's not finding a guy that's the problem, it's finding someone who is worth your while.'

His response really made me sit up and think. It was so stupidly simple and obvious, yet incredibly true! With age comes wisdom and a more thorough understanding of who you are and what you want. When you know what you do and don't want, you are less likely to lend your time and attention to those who don't quite measure up. Why waste time eh!

  2. "It's not finding a guy that's the problem, it's finding someone who is worth your while." I couldn't agree more.
